The Finnish state-owned gaming and lottery monopoly Veikkaus has announced it has joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as it continues to pledge to work to combat climate change.

The voluntary international initiative aims to promote achieving the goals set out in the Paris Agreement, including limiting the global rise of the average temperature to well below 2°C as compared with the pre-industrial era and pursuing efforts to limit the warming to below 1.5%.

Susanna Saikkonen, VP, Sustainability at Veikkaus, commented: “Fighting climate change requires that we all do our share. Our ambitious objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions sets the bar high and encourages us to continuously find ways of improving our climate actions.”

Veikkaus stated that, by joining an international initiative on climate change, it can retain the knowledge of the forefront of climate science, adopting its approach based on the latest data.

At the beginning of last year, the state-owned firm launched a project on environmental responsibility analysing the environmental impacts of its business operations.

The study found that 95% of its carbon dioxide emission came from its value chain, based on measurements taken from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Saikkonen added: “Therefore, it is our goal to reduce the emissions not only in our own operations but throughout the value chain.”

Moving into 2022, Veikkaus aims to reduce the environmental impact of its operations by managing the lifecycle of its slot machines and lottery terminals in a more eco-friendly manner and considering the materials used in the production process.
